TikTok's Taylor Odlozil Shares Wife Haley's Last Words to Son, 4, in Emotional Interview About Her Final Days

The TikToker, who documented his wife's final months living with terminal cancer, opens up about her final days before her death in July 2023

Taylor Odlozil is sharing more about the final days of late wife Haley's life.

Taylor appeared on The Get Back podcast, his first-ever podcast appearance, reflecting on his journey as Haley's caretaker throughout her eight years living with Stage IIIC ovarian cancer.

As he discussed what Haley's quality of life was in her final days, Taylor recalled the last real moment of connection between Haley and their 4-year-old son, Weston.

One of Haley's final days involved family and friends gathering to spend time with her. Haley, who was in and out of sleep at that time, recognized that it was the end of her life.

"We gathered around Haley and we prayed for her peace and for her to be accepted into the kingdom and that it was all going to be okay — that I was going to make it and that Weston was going to be okay. We prayed and Marcy, the hospice nurse, was there," he recalls.

"Haley comes to for a split second and she sees everybody that she loves around so she's looking around and she's like, 'This is it, isn't it? This is the end. This is just how I thought it was going to be.' "

Taylor continues, "We were like, 'It's okay.' She started getting really scared, right? I was like, 'It's okay, we just wanted to be around you. We just wanted to be with you.' And then I knew I needed to go get Weston immediately."

A family friend then drove Taylor to pick Weston up from day camp at their church and bring him home.

"I brought Weston it and I was like, 'This is it, buddy. Do you understand what's going on?' " he says. "And he looked at me like he knew what was going on, but he didn't want to say it. I just said 'You know I've been telling you that Mommy was going to go be with Jesus? Well he's coming and it may not be right now, but it's within ... it's very, very, very soon.' "

Taylor recalls reassuring his little boy during that moment. "I told him, 'It's nothing you did. You didn't do anything wrong. You were an amazing son. Your mother is very proud of you. I'm proud of you. You're an incredible child and there's nothing you did wrong that caused any of this. I just want you to know that no matter what happens, I will always be the best father I can be to you.'"

"And he started holding her hand and he was — you know, it was scary for him and he finally understood that this was the time that I've been talking about for a long time, that eventually Jesus was going to come take his mom home. And she finally, she came to and she looked at him and said, 'I love you, son,' and that was the last thing she ever said. She laid her head back down and she never spoke again and went into this coma state."

Earlier in the podcast, Taylor reflected on their journey to welcoming Weston, which included a surrogate, and how much motherhood meant to Haley.

"If you know Haley, her dream was to be a mom. She played with baby dolls growing up, not Barbie dolls. She wanted to be a mother. She just had — her heart and her spirit was made to be a mom," he shares.

When learning about the extent of her illness, Haley's focus was always on her future family.

"Her fear of that maybe being in jeopardy was out of control," Taylor says, recalling when Haley found out she had ovarian cancer.

"Haley's like, 'Please tell me I can have children,' and [the doctor] said, 'You're going to have to worry about that later, you're fighting for your life.' "

The single father shared his gratitude for the family friend who made that dream possible by acting as a surrogate. Weston was conceived with a donor egg, which that friend then carried.

"The night of our wedding, one of our family friends — who named their child for Haley and for years, she became very close to that child — the mother came up to us at our wedding and said, 'You guys deserve to be parents and if you're ever in a position to be, I will be your surrogate.' "

It opened up a world of possibility after Taylor thought that dream was done for.

"That's an amazing gesture. [At the time,] I was under the impression that we weren't going to have kids, because they don't let you adopt children if you're terminal. They don't want the child to go into a household with [that]. So I was also faced with, 'I'm going to be a dad, I'm going to be a single dad because I know she's not going to make it forever.' "

The couple put a lot of thought into moving forward and did during a period of good health for Haley. Sadly, as the surrogate's pregnancy progressed, Haley's cancer reappeared and began to spread.

"Weston was born in 2019 ... There's a video of Haley's reaction to him being born and it's just the most heartwarming because that's just what she's always dreaming of," Taylor says.

Later on, he spoke about how important it is to him to carry out everything Haley wanted for him and Weston.

"Our mission from the day he was born was that we were going to suffocate that boy with love. It was going to be too much love, and I never waste an opportunity to tell him I'm proud of him and that he's awesome and I'm blessed that I'm his dad," Taylor says.

"I don't think there's enough Godly, manly men that tell their sons I love you and I'm proud of you right now. Speak life into that boy, he's going to be a man one day. Speak life into him and be a role model."

Taylor and Haley spoke with PEOPLE in June 2023. At the time, the mom was hopeful that the family's social media videos would raise awareness of ovarian cancer in young women and, one day, serve as a time capsule for Weston of their time together.

"My biggest thing that I have always wanted from the get-go is that I never want him to think that I left by choice," Haley told PEOPLE. "I want him to know how hard I tried to stay here to be with them. I want him to know how hard and how much I love him and his daddy, and that I tried to do everything I possibly could with the time that I had, to make sure that we made memories."

If there's one takeaway from her videos and her story that Haley hoped her followers walk away with, it's, "Do not take your life for granted."

"Always have perspective. Everything in life is about perspective. And whether you're sitting in traffic, whether it's raining, there's something good in every day," she noted. "Instead of being mad it’s raining, roll down your windows, smell the freshly rained-on grass. There's something good in every day."

"Always be thankful for where there are good things. Don't focus on the bad things."
