Tim McCann says he is relishing the challenge of trying to win more silverware for Glentoran as he made a return to The Oval. McCann is back in east Belfast after accepting a role in Declan Devine's backroom team.

McCann, who won 14 trophies in eight successful seasons as a player with the Glens, said he was only too happy to come back and help the current crop of players achieve their own success. The 52-year-old highlighted the importance of understanding the club's history before attempting to write some more.

“I’m delighted to be back and had no hesitation when Deccy first spoke to me," McCann told the club website. "I’d do anything for the Glens at any time but Deccy’s passion and enthusiasm should fill everyone with confidence and positivity.

"He has acted quickly once the season ended to put the club in the right place for a summer of improvement in all areas of the club. He knows what it means to manage and get the best out of full-time players and I’ll be glad to help him.

"Although a lot of players left we have the nucleus of a good side here and once Deccy adds the established players he wants I expect us to be in a good place. Also because my son Cillian plays for them I’ve seen a lot of the Seconds/U20s this season.

"They have a great squad and there are a number of them you’d be confident promoting if necessary. That’s how good Glentoran teams always operated in the past.

"Deccy has said before that we need people here who know what Glentoran is and who can help others get it right away the way I did when I joined from Cliftonville.

"Now in the coaching team we have Deccy, Elliott, Andy Mathieson and I who have all played for good Glens teams and won trophies with the Glens. Our job now is to win more and I’m looking forward to that.”

Devine echoed McCann's sentiments as he welcomed him back to the club. “Tim is Glentoran through and through an outstanding coach and someone who knows the values of the club," he said.

"In my opinion he has been associated with some of the best Glentoran successes in recent years and brings a desire and work ethic to help us build the squad moving forward. I’m delighted to welcome Tim to the coaching staff and look forward to working alongside him.”
