A Timeline Of The Deadly Truck Attack In Nice

Here is how events unfolded last night following the truck attack in Nice, which has killed at least 84 people.

10.10pm UK time: Reports emerge that a vehicle has ploughed into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the French city of Nice, injuring several people. Video emerges of spectators running away from the famed Promenade des Anglais in panic.

10.30pm: Local authorities say the truck collision was an attack, with French media reporting that several gunshots were heard at the scene. A nearby reporter says: "People are running. It's panic. The lorry mounted the Prom - he drove over everyone."

10.35pm: Christian Estrosi, the Mayor of Nice, says the truck attack "seems to have killed dozens of people". Officials in the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture urge residents to stay indoors.

10.44pm: French news channel BFM TV says at least 30 people have died, with more than 100 injured.

10.51pm: Disturbing photographs emerge of bodies strewn across the road in the French Riviera town, with Le Parisien reporting that shots had been exchanged with police. The Nice-Matin newspaper releases a picture which shows the truck's windscreen riddled with bullets. Police ask locals to stop posting graphic images of the scene on social media.

10.57pm: Reports say the driver of the truck involved is dead.

11.08pm: French media says a "possible accomplice" to the lorry driver is on the run.

11.17pm: Sebastien Humbert, an official in the Alpes-Maritime area, is quoted as saying: "A truck rammed into the crowd over a long distance, which explains this extremely heavy toll."

11.20pm: President Francois Hollande heads back to Paris from the south of France for crisis talks.

11.32pm: Nice prosecutor's office is quoted as saying at least 60 people were killed in the truck attack. An eyewitness says: "We almost died … (the lorry) zig-zagged - you had no idea where it was going. The lorry ripped through everything … poles, trees. Some people were hanging on the door and tried to stop it."

11.41pm: The UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office urges Britons in the area to follow the instructions of the French authorities.

11.47pm: Pierre-Henry Brandet, a spokesman for France's Interior Ministry says: "It's going to be a very high toll."

12.00am: Nice prosecutor Jean-Michel Pretre says the truck drove two kilometres (1.3 miles) through the large crowds. Meanwhile, a Downing Street spokesman says the Prime Minister is being kept up to date on events in Nice, adding: "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible incident on what was a day of national celebration."

12.09am: Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump tweets: "In light of the horrible attack in Nice, France, I have postponed tomorrow's news conference concerning my Vice Presidential announcement."

12.19am: Mayor Estrosi, also president of the Cote d'Azur region, says the driver appeared to have "completely premeditated behaviour" and claims the truck was "loaded with arms and grenades". He goes on to describe the attack as "the worst moment in Nice's history".

12.29am: Prosecutors say that anti-terror officials have taken over the newly launched investigation into the attack, which saw the truck travel at high speed as it ran over spectators following a fireworks display.

12.45am: Damien Allemand, a Nice-Matin journalist, writes a description of the attack online: "An enormous white truck came along at crazy speed, turning the wheel to mow down the maximum number of people. I saw bodies flying like bowling pins along its route. Heard noises, cries that I will never forget."

12.55am: President Barack Obama condemns "what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack in Nice".

1.17am: Eric Ciotti, an Alpes-Maritime official, updates reporters to say 75 people are dead and 15 are in a critical condition. Minutes later, Mayor Estrosi says at least 77 people were killed in the attack.

2.25am: A police source tells the AFP news agency that identity papers of a French-Tunisian man, a 31-year-old who was a resident of Nice, have been found in the lorry.

2.47am: At a news conference, Mr Hollande describes the attack as an act of terror. He says "several children" are among the dead. A state of emergency in France is to be extended by three months. The country is to strengthen its role in Iraq and Syria.

3.24am: French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve says 80 people have been killed and 18 are in a critical condition.
