So far, only Holland has been announced for the cast in Shakespeare's tale of star-crossed lovers, with his doomed love Juliet's casting still to come.

Director Jamie Lloyd said: "Tom Holland is one of the greatest, most exciting young actors in the world. It is an honour to welcome him back to the West End."

People have been sharing on social media that they are keen to find out who Holland's co-star will be, as one person wrote on X: "Who will be playing Juliet? I'm hoping Emma Watson."

Holland's star career began in London's West End when he was just nine years old and was cast in the lead role in Billy Elliot the Musical.

Since then, his most noted films have included Avengers and Spider-Man instalments, and he recently starred in Apple TV series The Crowded Room, a psychological thriller based on the real life case of a man arrested for a New York City shooting in the 1970s.

He said that he had found the show so taxing that he needed to take a year off, explaining last summer: "It was a tough time, for sure. We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before. And then on top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure.

"I'm now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was."
