Tom Hollander Chokes Up While Talking About Baby Boy: ‘Suddenly He’s Here’

The 'Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans' actor and Fran Hickman welcomed their first baby together last year

Tom Hollander quietly welcomed a baby boy last summer — and now he’s speaking out about becoming a first-time father later in life.

The White Lotus actor emotionally admitted during an interview on LIVE with Kelly and Mark that he had regretted not having any children before his son’s birth.

Hollander described fatherhood as “a wonderful thing” and told hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos that the idea of becoming a parent wasn’t top of mind until recent years.

“I sort of spent many years not really thinking that I was going to be a dad or even wanting to be a dad,” he said. “Laterally, I started to regret that, and suddenly it was ... suddenly he's here so that's lovely.”

Hollander, who welcomed his baby with interior designer Fran Hickman, added that his parents are thrilled about the new addition to the family.

“They'd long given up on me,” he quipped. “They're in their late 80s.”

Hollander stars in the upcoming FX and Hulu series Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans. He portrays author Truman Capote, who writes an exposé about his powerful and privileged friends.

Ahead of the show’s Jan. 31 debut, Hollander attended the Ryan Murphy-produced limited series’ red carpet premiere at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on Tuesday, alongside costars Calista Flockhart, Chloë Sevigny, Diane Lane, Molly Ringwald, Naomi Watts and Demi Moore.

When asked what Capote would think of the public’s obsession with celebrities and their families on the internet, Hollander told PEOPLE on Jan. 23 on the red carpet that Capote, being a rebel, would have been “quite snotty” toward it all.

“I'm sure he would have been sort of contemptuous in a way,” Hollander said. “I'm sure he would have been quite snotty about it. But, he was a rebel, wasn't he?... He might have gone, ‘Well, I don't want to be part of that.’ I will instead be in private. I don't know, but I'm sure he would have had a strong reaction to it.”

Meanwhile, costar Sevigny, 49, talked about parenting a 3-year-old boy, whom she and her husband Siniša Mačković welcomed in May 2020.

“The more his brain works, the more his vocabulary grows, the more his imagination grows and his love and his empathy for others,” Sevigny told PEOPLE. “It’s just like every day is a joy. Pain in the a-- though.”
