Tom Selleck still thinks there's hope for “Blue Bloods”: 'CBS will come to their senses'

“We aren't sliding off down a cliff. We're doing good shows and still holding our place,” Selleck said.

Tom Selleck still has hope for Blue Bloods to stay on the air.

In an interview with CBS News, the Magnum P.I. star said he believes the police procedural will find a way to continue after its 14th season, which CBS previously announced would be Blue Bloods’ last.

When asked about the future of the series, Selleck said, "Well, that's a good question. I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses. We're the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast. We're winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: We aren't sliding off down a cliff. We're doing good shows, and still holding our place. So, I don't know. You tell me!"

CBS announced in November that the crime series, which stars Selleck as the head of a law enforcement dynasty in New York City, would end in the fall of 2024.

"For the past 13 years it has been an honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve in New York City, but also displayed the importance of family,” Selleck said in a statement at the time. “Working alongside these incredible actors, writers, producers, directors, and crew has been a dream come true. I’m grateful to have been a part of this extraordinary group for over 275 episodes."

In the wake of the announcement, fans and cast members voiced their enthusiasm for the show, which also stars Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, and Andrew Terraciano. After the #SaveBlueBloods campaign picked up significant traction online, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach insisted that the show won’t return for another season last week.

“We absolutely will miss the family dinners. It is important to give [the] show the sendoff it deserves,” she said. “We love this cast, we love their passion for the show. All shows have to come to an end. It’s important to us to refresh the schedule. We are going to end the show come December.”

Selleck also told CBS News that he fears he might not find more projects after the series ends. “As an actor, you never lose – I don't lose, anyway – that sense that every time I finish a job, it's my last job,” he said.  "You know, hopefully I keep working enough to hold onto [my ranch].... Am I set for life? Yeah, but maybe not on a 63-acre ranch!"

Selleck insisted that he has no plans to retire. "You just go to work and you do the work, “ he said. “And I have a lot of reverence for what I call 'the work,' and I love it. And I'd like to keep doing it."
