Cabango backs brother to follow in Wales footsteps

Wales football international Ben Cabango has backed his rising rugby star brother Theo to follow in his footsteps and play for Wales soon.

Ben, the older brother at 23, has represented Wales on seven occasions in football and has become a mainstay at the heart of the swansea-city-fc>Swansea City defence.

Cardiff Rugby speedster Theo, 21, is tipped for big things and could be a future Wales rugby international. As Ben revealed to Swansea's official website, the Canbangos' cousin will certainly hope that's the case.

"My cousin's got a bet on that. He put a bet on us when we were really young for us both to have a cap by the age of 25. So there is a bit of pressure on my brother now to step up and get one!" Cabango said.

"I'm sure the way he is going, obviously he has had a few injuries which have set him back, but I'm pretty sure he is going to get there soon. He's got four years, so hopefully he can step up now and make it!"

The drive for them both to succeed started at a young age, with Ben even remembering the preparation that used to go into their school sports days.

"I remember sports day for school, we used to get up at 7am before school and have a little warm-up and a run around the garden!" he added. "We've always just been competitive and we want us both to succeed. I feel like when one of us is doing well, we want the other one to do well and it drives you on."

Wales to host Spain in WXV play-off

Wales will host Spain in their WXV play-off match at the Arms Park on June 29.

The winner of that match will qualify for WXV2 in South Africa this September, however the losing side will head out to Dubai for WXV3.

Ioan Cunningham's side finished bottom of the table during the Six Nations earlier this year, while Spain qualified for the play-off after being crowned Rugby Europe Women's champions.

They will be no pushovers, either. Spain were part of the Six Nations until 2006 and hammered Sweden 53-0 in their last outing. Indeed, the last time the two sides met in 2019, Spain emerged victorious with a 29-5 win.

Speaking about the clash, Cunningham said: "The squad, coaches and staff know how important this game is.

"Victory against Italy provides us with a platform to build on with the 2025 World Cup in England still very much the focus.

"One of the goals we have set ourselves is to build the depth and competition for places in the squad and we did that with six new caps getting a taste of Test match rugby during our last campaign.

"Spain have been one of the traditional benchmarks in our game and will travel to Wales full of confidence after their recent performances.

"We know they will be determined to make a statement against us at home in front of our own supporters at Cardiff Arms Park."
