Toronto police have identified a 16-year-old boy shot dead inside a Parkdale apartment building early Monday.

CBC Toronto has removed the victim's identity due to provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act

The boy was shot inside an apartment unit in the area of King Street W. and Jameson Avenue, according to police.

Police said they responded to a call for the sound of gunshots shortly after midnight.

When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds.

"Life-saving measures were performed, however, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene," police said in a news release on Tuesday.

The boy is the city's 46th homicide victim of the year.

On Monday afternoon, Det.-Sgt. Jeff Allington told reporters at a news conference that the victim was not a resident of the building, but he declined to say how or why he was in the building.

Allington said "a number of people" were in and out of the building around the time of the murder.

There's no word on suspects.

Investigators are requesting anyone with information to contact police or leave a tip with Crime Stoppers anonymously.
