Tourist Amazed as Hippo Stops Traffic in South Africa

A Dutch tourist documented the experience of taking a stroll in Saint Lucia, South Africa, where he saw a hippopotamus nonchalantly crossing the road in front of him as he “walked the streets” of the town.

Footage filmed by Marco Van Hoogdalem shows a hippo moseying across a road and getting near a car in Saint Lucia, a destination known for its proximity to iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of the largest hippo populations in Africa.

Hoogdalem told Storyful that he saw the hippo as he was trying to find a spot to eat in Saint Lucia.

He told Storyful that despite the danger of the situation, the experience was “really super beautiful.”

According to the Voice of America, hippos kill an estimated 500 people a year in Africa. Credit: Marco Van Hoogdalem via Storyful
