Town clock to fall silent for six weeks as work scheduled

The chimes of a historic clock in the centre of a Suffolk town will fall silent as work is set to take place.

The Moyse's Hall town clock at the front of the Bury St Edmunds museum will stop chiming for the next six weeks as work is scheduled for the clock tower.

The Moyse’s Hall clock, which dates back to the 1860, chimes every 15 minutes.

A West Suffolk Council spokesperson said it is now being deliberately wound down to enable repairs to the flint walls in the clock tower.

Repairs to the ceiling will also be carried out during the programme.

The work at the museum, which houses the Gershom Parkington collection of clocks, is due to last up to six weeks.

The clock was also wound down in 2018 for the first time in its history to allow safety work to take place.
