A former HSBC bank in Hyde will be transformed into flats now planning permission has been granted. The Market Place site, opposite the town hall, will see its upper floors turned into flats.

Plans include two apartments on the first floor, both with an open plan kitchen, living and dining space, one bedroom and a shower room. There will only be one apartment on the second floor containing two bedrooms, kitchen/diner, living room and a shower room.

The entrance would be on the ground floor, but there is no mention in the plans of how the space on the ground floor would be used.

The building sits next to Clarendon Shopping Centre - which is expected to be transformed in the coming years as part of the new Hyde masterplan.

The area around Market Place, and the shopping centre itself, are central to the transformation of the town in the masterplan. In this, the shopping centre would be demolished and rebuilt as well as seeing a new public realm created on the market square - right on the doorstep of the former bank.

Despite one objection to the plans, who believed it should be repurposed, the applicant Regaland was granted approval by Tameside Council.

The HSBC bank was shut back in 2016 as part of a wider set of closures across the country. Only the Natwest and Halifax banks are left operational in the town centre now after Lloyds shut its doors last year.
