Tragedy as man, 85, dies after being hit by car in horror crash on busy road

An elderly man has died after being hit by a car on a residential street.

Emergency services were scrambled to New Market Street in Colne yesterday morning (July 4) following reports of a road traffic collision between a pedestrian and a Honda HR-V. Police closed the road in both directions between North Valley Road and Church Street for several hours.

In a statement issued this morning, a Lancashire Constabulary spokesperson told LancsLive that despite the best efforts of the emergency services, an 85-year-old man died at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Police said the driver remained at the scene and 'no arrests have been made at this stage'. Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision and are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of New Market Street and Hartley Street between 11.05am and 11.15am.

A force spokesperson said: "We’ve got some sad news to bring you this morning and are asking for your help. Yesterday (July 4), at around 11:10am, we received a report of a collision between a pedestrian and a Honda HR-V on the junction of New Market Street and Hartley Street in Colne.

Very sadly, despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the pedestrian, an 85-year-old man died at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

"Our thoughts are with them at this very sad time. The driver remained at the scene, and no arrests have been made at this stage.

"We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision and are now appealing for your help and asking for anyone with CCTV or Dashcam footage of New Market Street and Hartley Street, between 11:05am and 11:15am, or anyone who may have witnessed this, to get in contact.
