A person has died after emergency services were alerted to a casualty on the railway lines in the North East this morning (Wednesday, May 22).

Paramedics and the British Transport Police were called to Stockton Railway Station after reports of a person on the tracks shortly before 8am.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

National Railways reported disruption between Eaglescliffle / Thornaby and Sunderland, while police and ambulance crews dealt with the incident. The lines have now reopened.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Stockton railway station shortly before 8am this morning (Wednesday) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said:  "We received a call at 7.54am this morning (Wednesday 22 May) to reports of an incident at Stockton Station. We dispatched two ambulance crews and a duty officer to the scene."
