A person was tragically found dead on the railway line in Ashton-under-Lyne on Sunday night (May 5). Police were called to reports of a casualty on the tracks at the station at around 9.59pm.

The person, whose gender and age has not been confirmed by the British Transport Police (BTP), was pronounced dead at the scene. Train services were halted for a number of hours as emergency services dealt with the incident.

British Transport Police have since confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious and that a file will now be prepared for the coroner in due course.

A BTP spokesperson said: "Officers were called to Ashton-under-Lyne railway station at around 21.59pm on Sunday (5 May) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
