Tragedy as person 'hit by train' on Edinburgh to London rail line

An element of the east coast mainline has been closed between Darlington and Newcastle after a person was hit by a train.

LNER issued advice on their website urging travellers to avoid using the route and to look to use alternative arrangements.

The train operator said that several ticket sharing agreements are in place so that travellers are able to travel to their desired destination.

It is understood that the incident took place at around 11.47am on Friday, July 5.

Posting on their website, LNER state: "We are experiencing major disruption across the LNER route due to person being hit by a train between Durham and Newcastle. Please check your entire journey before you travel.

"Due to the severity of the disruption and the length of time we estimate this incident to last, we strongly advise you to avoid travelling if you can. Trains are running, but there is major disruption, and you may be heavily delayed and/or experience overcrowding."

LNER also posted on X: “It is with great sadness that we report that a person has been hit by a train between Darlington and Newcastle. Services running between these stations are subject to cancellations and delays.”
