Looking for a budget-friendly yet stunning European holiday spot for 2024? Travel guru Simon Calder has dished out his top picks for the year ahead.

On the telly, Simon highlighted Portugal as the go-to destination for Brits seeking value in Western Europe. Boasting average summer highs of 29 degrees, Portugal is a prime pick for sun-seekers from the UK.

Research by Post Office Travel Money also ranks it among the cheapest holiday spots in Europe, reports the Express. While Spain often steals the limelight, its Atlantic neighbour offers an equally enticing option for a cost-effective break this year.

In a chat with BBC Breakfast, Simon enthused: "I love Lisbon, one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities and the locations on its western flanks - in particular Cascais, Estoril and Sintra."

When you're in Lisbon, don't miss the chance to wander through the historic Alfama district or enjoy a tipple in the buzzing Bairro Alto. Cascais and Estoril are charming coastal towns a stone's throw from Lisbon, and Sintra is renowned for its vibrant National Palace of Pena.

Venturing further, Simon described the Setubal Peninsula as "much less well known, but full of surprises". Situated just below Lisbon, the Setubal Peninsula is your ticket to tranquil beaches away from Portugal's more frequented sands.

Simon shared his recommendations: "Do try O Barbas, an amazing seafood restaurant overlooking the Atlantic in Costa da Caparica, the wild windy and atmospheric cape of Espichel; and Setubal itself, a sleepy friendly city."

Next on the list is Porto, Portugal's second-largest city, famed for being one of Europe's most wander-friendly locales. It offers a great alternative for those who have done Lisbon.

Porto is known worldwide for its port wine, and the decorative tiled facades of its city buildings add to its picturesque appeal. Venture into the neighbouring Douro Valley for regional wine tasting, or consider a river tour.
