Travellers have now left playing fields in Exeter and are reputed to have moved on to Somerset, while an encampment of Travellers have set up in a car park in Exeter. Police were called to Cowick Barton Playing Fields in St Thomas last Monday, April 15, after access was gained despite height restriction barriers being installed in 2022 to prevent any entry on to the land.

Exeter City Council (ECC), which owns the playing field, served them with an eviction notice that stated they had to leave the site by Monday, April 22. However, they remained on the site.

A county court bailiff was due to attend the encampment this morning, April 26, but they had already left. The council is now dealing with a group of Travellers at outdoor sports complex Exeter Arena, formerly known as Exhibition Fields, in Whipton.

According to reports on social media, Travellers seen at Cowick Barton Playing Fields are now at a park in Yeovil.

ECC, which also owns Exeter Arena, is now attempting to evict travellers from its land.

An Exeter City Council spokesman said: "When the county court bailiff turned up this morning [April 26] to serve the eviction notice the travellers had already gone. The site has now been cleaned up.

“We are aware of an encampment of travellers in the Exeter Arena car park. They arrived late on Wednesday evening at a time when the facility was open for public use, so no entry was forced. We will be taking the necessary steps to regain possession of the land.”
