I tried the gelato at Bristol's award-winning Italian parlour

Nestled between the busy shops of Cotham Hill is Panunzio's. The parlour opened its doors in 2020 and with stellar reviews, I knew I had to give it a try.

Not to be mistaken with ice cream, Panunzio's serves the Italian dessert gelato, which is creamier and contains around half the fat typically in an ice cream.

The parlour’s entrance is inviting. Delicate purple and white flowers decorate the shop front and the window is covered in awards - I knew I was in for a treat.

Greeted by jolly Italian music and Thary, the friendly manager, I was overwhelmed by the options on offer. But my curiosity took over and I had to sample the ricotta flavoured treat.

You can sample two flavours before making your ultimate choice. You may not associate cheese with ice cream but the ricotta was delicious: sweeter than I expected with a creamy and slightly nutty taste.

A double scoop of pistachio and hazelnut was only £5.15. I think I have paid this for one small scoop on holiday.

One scoop is usually £3.45 and two scoops are £4.65. There is a 50p surcharge for pistachio flavours.

Thary explained that because of the quality ingredients used, each gelato’s colour is completely natural. The pistachio, for example, was not a bright green like I had seen before.

The pistachio gelato really did taste authentic. With this being my favourite ice cream flavour, I have often found elsewhere that it can be sweet but with not much flavour.

This was not the case at Panunzio's. The flavours exploded in my mouth and the more gelato I enjoyed, the more I experienced the pistachio and hazelnut together.

It was sunny outside, so I decided to enjoy my gelato on the outdoor seating surrounded by the beautiful plants. Around ten people visited in the 20 minutes or so I was there and each left with a huge smile walking out with their generous helpings of gelato.

By the time I got to the end of the cone, there was not a single part that was lacking ice cream. However, the cone did not get at all soggy and was crunchy and tasty.

I will definitely be returning to Panunzio's in the near future. I can't wait to try more flavours and I would highly recommend this quaint and charming place to anyone who loves a sweet treat.
