I tried the new patisserie in Hull and the gooiness of its brownies was unreal

A new patisserie called Buckinghams has opened in east Hull and I am always eager to try out homemade goodies right on my doorstep.

While living east of the river has its benefits, we are pretty short of independent places to eat that aren't pizza, kebab, or fried chicken takeaways. But a daring trio have set up shop selling upmarket baked goods in Buckingham Street, just off Holderness Road, and have been welcomed by the community with open arms.

Being pretty nosy, I couldn't stay away for long. When I'd looked at the reviews online, I was struck by how impressed customers were by the brownies so I would be remiss not to buy one myself.

I didn't expect to be blown away, but my first bite proved me wrong. It was incredibly close to my idea of the perfect brownie: boldly chocolatey, not super-sweet, with a cake-like consistency on the outside and a fudge-like middle.

Too many recipes taste more of sugar than rich, scrumptious cocoa power but the Buckinghams brownie had real flavour. I was also gratified by how moist and gooey it was in its centre, elevating it beyond a simple chocolate cake and turning it into a decadent treat.

Buckinghams counter showed many other mouthwatering options - cherry pie, Jammy Dodger blondies, rocky road, jam and coconut traybake, topped croissants, cream filled croissants and fruit tart with cream fillings.

As much as I love chocolate, I'm very partial to the combination of fresh fruit and cream. The next time I'm in the area, I will definitely be sampling some of the fruit pies.

With the beautiful weather we've been having, I can see them being perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It's nice to have a new family-run business in east Hull, and I hope Buckinghams continue to do really well.
