As I looked to continue my visits to different food businesses in the Grainger Market, I decided to head to one of the most well established and loved places I could think of, Slice. The pizza seller is well-known for its huge and great tasting pizza slices, so I knew that I had to get something when I went past.

I picked myself up a pepperoni pizza slice as well as a lemon flavoured San Pellegrino, which came in at just five pounds, which I think is a reasonable price, especially when you consider the size of the slice you get. It was also offered to me that the slice could be heated up slightly in the oven, something which I was very appreciative of.

To put the size of the pizza slices into perspective, all three corners of the slice comfortably go over the edge of the paper plate that it was served on. I then sat down on the small seating area outside of the shop and tucked into my doughy treat.

The pizza made by Slice is what I would describe as being in the quintessential Italian-style, thin crust and the perfect amount of cheese and tomato, with of course the addition of the the slightly spicy pepperoni. I love a San Pellegrino anyway, but the tangy lemon flavour was a perfect accompaniment to the fresh pizza.

Whilst I was there, I had a chat with Agostino Bellassi, the owner of Slice, who spoke about the importance of the Grainger Market to his business and what the future looks like. He said: "We have been here for 10 years and it has been very good, although the reopening after the pandemic was a bit slow to pick up.

"There is now more competition with a lot of the food places that have moved in which helps keep things fresh. The lunchtime is still very busy and we have a queue, especially at weekends when there are matches on at St James' Park.

"The refurbishment of the Grainger Market will hopefully be great for us as businesses in here, as it'll make it a better environment for us to work in and it will also encourage more customers to come in. We get regular customers and the seating area brings people in, which is very important for us.

"Overall, I am really happy with our first 10 years here and I think the business is doing well. I'm hoping to be here for another 10 years, and it will be really great if we can continue here in the Grainger Market for that amount of time.

It was great to get more food in the Grainger Market, and further show the amazing range of options that we have in the city centre. I also think that the £9m funding will help to bring this already high-quality place to a whole new level.
