Hidden in the Team Valley trading estate in Gateshead is La Dolce Cucina desserts, and the business has been making quite the impression, with huge queues and social media attention.

One particular product getting a lot of attention is a bun, which is inspired by the Maritozzi brioche buns filled with Chantilly cream which originated in Rome.

So I jumped at the chance to try one myself and went on my way to La Dolce Cucina. When I arrived, my next task was to decide which flavour bun I wanted to try, so I asked owner Sam Bruford for her recommendation.

Based on this, I decided to go with the pistachio bun, as this has also been the one that has been selling the best. I sat down in the shop and, despite grabbing a spoon on my way, I was advised by Sam to dig in straight away like a sandwich or a slice of cake.

So, that's exactly what I did, a move which did leave my mouth and nose quite green and messy, due to the colour of the pistachio sauce and the ice cream. As soon as I took a bite, I instantly realised why these desserts have been so popular, as the sweetness of the brioche bun works perfectly with the pistachio flavour, and I instantly wanted more, soon polishing off the whole thing.

Now, I am used to having a brioche bun with a burger for example, but this idea of using it in the traditional Italian way of filling it with Chantilly cream is one I had never came across before, but am now a huge fan of. The striking look of the green pistachio sauce adds to the quality of the product and makes it look great in social media posts.

When speaking about the Maritozzi buns and why she decided to stock them, Sam said: "It's my mum that makes all of the Maritozzi buns, and we like the fact that they are a traditional product which originate from Rome in Italy.

"When people get a dessert from us, they are getting a bespoke product, where they can choose each part of it and customise it so it is exactly how they want. The pistachio buns in particular have blown up on social media which is amazing for us, so thank you to everyone for sharing it around."

So all in all, I had a great experience at La Dolce Cucina and the Maritozzi bun was tremendous. I will certainly be heading back to the Team Valley bakery soon, in order to try a milkshake or another one of their sumptuous desserts.
