True Detective Boss Confirms Season 5 Will Have ‘Different Characters’ and ‘a Different Setting’ Than Night Country

Were you hoping to see more Alaska crime-solving from True Detective’s Danvers and Navarro next season? Sorry, but you’re left out in the cold.

The upcoming fifth season of HBO’s crime drama anthology will feature “different characters,” a “different setting” and a “different story” than Season 4’s Night Country, showrunner Issa López confirms to our sister site Variety. That fits with True Detective’s pattern of refreshing its cast and setting each season, but some fans were hoping to see more of Danvers and Navarro, since López served as showrunner last season as well.

López adds that she is currently “in the writing” process on Season 5, “and it’s a blast… It’s a completely different adventure.” She won’t reveal much about where the new season is headed yet, but she doesn’t rule out a connection to Season 4 in some form: “I think you will be pleasantly surprised.”

HBO renewed True Detective for a fifth season in February, days after Season 4 — starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as Danvers and Navarro — wrapped up its six-episode run. (Read our season finale recap here.) López will return as showrunner after taking over for series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who shepherded the first three seasons. Night Country has become the most-watched season of True Detective, per HBO, with 12.7 million viewers across all platforms.
