'True leader' Richie Myler outlines John Asiata quality as Hull FC make statement signing

Hull FC have confirmed the signing of John Asiata on a three-year deal. As exclusively reported by Hull Live this Friday afternoon, the loose-forward will join the club from the 2025 season on a marquee contract, with Richie Myler securing his first significant deal as director of rugby.

Currently 31 years old, Asiata joined Leigh ahead of 2022 and helped win the Leythers promotion to Super League. He won the Challenge Cup last season and was a Dream Team member after a stellar campaign.

Before that, Asiata played for both North Queensland Cowboys and Brisbane Broncos and has over 100 NRL appearances to his name. He also played for both Samoa and Tonga on the international stage, having made his professional debut in 2014.

Hull, who identified Asiata weeks ago, moved quickly to secure the deal, with the club fending off other Super League interest. Leigh were also keen to keep hold of one of their priced assets beyond this year, with the player choosing the Black and Whites after his ambitions aligned with new director of rugby, Richie Myler.

"I’m really excited for the new challenge that lies ahead for me at Hull FC," Asiata said after signing for Hull FC. "After speaking to Richie Myler, it’s clear that we are both on the same page in wanting to help this club be better than ever before.

"Thank you to Adam, Richie and the Hull FC family for having faith in me. I really look forward to getting stuck in with the boys once the time comes. I also want to acknowledge and thank God for opening this door for me and my family."

Myler, meanwhile, believes Asiata will be crucial to the club's identity moving forward and shows the direction they are heading in. "Everyone at Hull FC is absolutely delighted to bring a player of John’s calibre to the club," he added. "John is a highly respected individual who is a true leader on and off the field.

"A signing of this quality clearly shows the direction in which the club is heading. We are delighted to have John as part of our journey over the next three years, and he will really help define our identity as a club moving forward."
