A care home in Truro has been awarded a 'Good' rating across the board by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors visited Lowena care home on January 11, with the official report published on June 12

Lowena delivers personal or nursing care and provides support for those with learning disabilities or autism.

The care home, run by Cornwall Council, caters for individuals who need temporary respite support and personal care.

During the CQC's first inspection, Lowena was assisting two individuals, with three more during the second visit.

In total, the widely-respected facility currently supports 34 families.

The CQC report highlighted the service as an important lifeline for its users and their families, providing care, dignity, choices, and independence for persons with a learning disability and autistic individuals.

Upon examination of Lowena's specific services and approach to care, inspectors were content that the care home was fully meeting the principles of "right support, right care, right culture" that underpin the CQC's assessments and judgements.

The overall 'Good' rating was given following specific assessments in various areas, including safety, effectiveness, quality of care and leadership, all which recieved a score of 75 out of a possible 100.

It was also rated on responsiveness, which was also rated 'Good' and achieved a score of 71 out of 100.

Inspectors found "the model of care and setting maximised people’s choice, control, and independence.

"Care was person-centred and promoted people’s dignity, privacy, and human rights.

"The ethos, values, attitudes, and behaviours of leaders and care staff ensured people using services led confident, inclusive, and empowered lives."

In relaying the experiences of those benefiting from Lowena's services, the CQC report provided further reassurance of Lowena's quality of care.

An excerpt from the report stated that "relatives told us they believed their family members were safe.

"People were comfortable with staff in the service and enjoyed spending time with them".

The results of the assessment are a testament to the hard work of Lowena's registered manager, William Alexander Richards, and nominated individuals, Katharine Angharad Rhys Evan-Hughes, and Deborah Jane Isted.

As well as an affirmation to those they serve, the completion of a successful assessment offers them encouragement in the continual provision of their invaluable service.

Lowena care home remains committed to improving their standards where possible, and ensuring that their service users have the support they need to live full lives.
