Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford have sent shockwaves across the nation with the announcement that their 14-year marriage has come to an end. The couple's representatives confirmed the news, stating that they are currently going through divorce proceedings.

Speculation had been mounting about the state of the Loose Women star, aged 64, and her Northern Irish husband, also 64, after the public noticed the pair hadn't been seen together for some time. This was despite them still speaking fondly of each other in interviews, reports the Mirror.

Reports of fiery arguments and Ruth's admission that Eamonn's health struggles were "testing" for the family fuelled rumours of a secret separation. Their separation has stunned the entertainment world.

A source speaking to MailOnline said: "It's a very sorry tale. They are both so loved by the British public, they won over so many people on This Morning which they hosted for more than a decade. They were as close to Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan as you could get."

A friend of the couple also disclosed to The Sun that the two had grown apart recently due to their individual work commitments leading them in separate directions. Concern among fans grew when it was observed that the couple had not posted pictures of one another on social media since July 2022, prior to the confirmation of their breakup today.

Here is an insight into the shocking split of one of television's most cherished duos....

Explosive rows

In 2022, Ruth confessed to her Loose Women co-stars that she tends to "avoids" and "ignores" Eamonn following a disagreement. The conversation was sparked by the topic of whether couples should go to bed angry.

Ruth said: "The thing is, you know Eamonn and I, I just think that what some people call a row, I just call a disagreement or I don't have the same opinion as you."

Speaking to fellow panellists Kelle Bryan, Coleen Nolan and Katie Piper, Ruth said: "Sometimes we would never resolve it, so we're not that couple that go, 'I think we need to talk about this,' because I would still think that I was right about something. Genuinely, that's my opinion and it's just not your opinion and we'd end up arguing.

"We have times where we would then ignore each other for the day, as in during the day. I'd just avoid him and think, 'He's getting on my nerves,' but then the minutiae of life happen, don't they? So when Jack was living at home, somebody would have to go, 'Who is driving Jack to go hockey? ' There's a point where you have to have a conversation and it kind of goes away."

Back in 2020, the presenter admitted that she and Eammon do have "big rows and argue" off-camera. She revealed to Prima: "Eamonn and I can have big rows and argue, then 10 minutes later we're laughing about something."

Ruth also candidly shared insights into her relationship with Eamonn. She admitted: "We've been together 23 years so it has been a long and happy relationship but we have our moments. There are times when he really annoys me and I really annoy him and there are times when I think, 'Get out of my face.' Obviously, you're not always going to get on, but you have to make it work."

The couple, who are among the nation's favourite TV hosts, have had to juggle their demanding schedules, which recently led to speculation when they were not seen together for several weeks. Adding fuel to the speculation, Eamonn posted a contemplative black and white photo of himself on social media earlier this year, during a period when he and Ruth had not appeared in public together. This prompted his followers to question Ruth's whereabouts, especially after a family picture from his granddaughter Isabella's christening at Easter did not include her.

One follower asked: "Where is your wife Eamonn Holmes? " Meanwhile, Ruth was actually spending Easter Sunday partaking in an egg hunt at the park and enjoying lunch at the pub with friends, which led her own fans to ask, "Where is Eamonn? ".

Eamonn's health

Eamonn has also been open about his challenging health issues. He needed significant surgery after suffering a slipped disc. Known for his openness about using a wheelchair and crutches, the presenter has been vocal about his struggles with chronic pain on X, previously known as Twitter.

Having worked alongside Eamonn for 15 years on This Morning, Ruth shared details of a botched back operation that left him reliant on a wheelchair. Despite these challenges, she made no indication of any issues between them, adding, "It's testing, but we manage as a family."

A telling last photograph

Since July 2022, neither Eamonn nor Ruth have featured on each other's Instagram feeds. While they continued to mention one another in interviews and on their respective programmes, Good Morning Britain and Loose Women, their social media presence suggested otherwise.

In a touching tribute, Ruth's last Instagram post featuring the couple was on their anniversary two years prior, with the heartfelt caption: "Happy Anniversary my love @eamonnholme Loved you then Love you still Always have Always will."
