I try new pub-based takeaway pizza and 'no two mouthfuls are the same' - here's my review

When you have a whole pizza yourself it can feel like a monotonous meal - great for the first few slices but then just more of the same. But Pizza Amore serve up a pizza that manages to be a bit more interesting than normal.

The business has opened recently, based in the kitchen of The Distillery pub in Market Street in Leicester city centre. I found them on Deliveroo, where their deal for a pizza, a side and a drink for £14.49 seemed reasonable compared to other takeaways.

But then as soon as I started placing my order the agreement changed. When you chose your pizza, that £14.49 deal you thought you'd agreed to starts to rise if you want anything other than a margarita or an NYC pepperoni.

For an American hot you add 49p and for a meat feast it's an extra £1.49. I went for a BBQ chicken, which was an additional £1.29.

The sides, which often included another bump to the price, include chicken wings, garlic bread and fries, but I went for dough balls pizzanova. They're like tiny pizzas - balls of dough, each with a disc of pepperoni stuck on with a generous glob of cheese - add on another £1.49 to the bill.

Then, because it was on Deliveroo, there was a 99p delivery fee plus a £1.73 "service fee", bringing the whole "deal" up to £19.99. So I was expecting it to be really good.

It came by bike in only about half an hour, arriving in a box and two separate paper bags. Not very environmentally friendly but at least the drink stayed cold wrapped up in it's own little bag with a couple of wooden forks and some hand wipes.

The pizza looked great. The chicken pieces were sort of frayed apart like pulled pork and there were nice slices of onion that had a good strong flavour that worked really well against the sticky sweetness of the barbecue sauce that had been sparingly squirted over the surface.

The dough was flawless and it carried a lot of flavour. The tomato sauce was little more than a red stain on the dough but that seemed to work fine.

Looking at the pizza, it seemed like they'd been a bit cheap with the toppings - there had been an option to add more for even more money, of course. If they felt bad about charging me £20 for a £14 meal, they didn't pile on a bit extra to make up for it.

With fees and delivery, the pizza, drink and eight dough balls cost £19.99

But it was the fact there was so little of everything that made it all taste so interesting. The cheese covered little more than half the surface but that was fine - you didn't need a cheese hit in every mouthful.

As well as the chicken and onion slices, there were tiny bits of bacon scattered around so every mouthful had a different mix of bits, making it feel like a more complex dish. And when I stopped feeling so hard done by the extra charges I just enjoyed the pizza and it was a really great pizza.

The dough balls were tasty and juicy and overall it was a delicious meal.

Verdict

Pizza Amore know how to make a good pizza. You might think you deserve more toppings for your money but sometimes less is more. Trust them - they know what they're doing. 5/5
