A flight packed with tourists heading to Bulgaria on their summer holiday was diverted to Prague after a medical emergency on the flight.

Flight BY1400 from Newcastle International Airport to Burgas, Bulgaria, was forced to land in the Czech capital more than 1,500km from its final destination on Thursday, June 27. One passenger was taken off the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft and transferred to a hospital in Prague.

The Tui plane then continued on to Burgas from Prague. Usually, the direct flight takes around three hours and 45 minutes, but ChronicleLive understands that passengers were delayed for a time in Prague before taking off again for the second leg of the journey.

Burgas, which is served from Newcastle Airport by both TUI and Jet2, is the closest airport to popular Bulgarian tourist destination Sunny Beach.

A TUI UK spokesperson said: "We’d like to apologise to customers on flight TOM1400 who experienced delay due to a passenger becoming unwell onboard.

"The aircraft was diverted to Prague so the customer was able to receive medical assistance, before it continued to Burgas Airport. We’d like to thank customers for their patience and understanding."
