Rescuers tunnel underneath home and dig up kitchen in crazy mission to save pet dog

A pet dog has been dramatically rescued after he became trapped underneath a Swansea home. Crews were called early on Tuesday morning after a call saying a three-year-old small dog was stuck under the property. Firefighters arrived at the scene - in Parkmill in the Gower Peninsula - shortly after 7am.

Seeing that the dog, named Jock, was in danger, they removed a large quantity of patio slabs and had to dig a tunnel underneath the property’s kitchen. They also created a hole in the kitchen floor to gain further access to Jock. Then, using special equipment, rescuers were able to bring the poodle to the surface safely and hand him back to his owner.

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 7.11am on Tuesday, April 23, the Swansea West crew was called to an incident in Parkmill, Swansea. The crew responded to a small dog trapped under a domestic dwelling of non-standard construction. Due to the confined space and inability to locate the dog’s exact location, the Wales Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team was requested to attend - comprised of crew members from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service who have highly specialised training in Urban Search and Rescue environments.

“Crews proceeded to remove a large quantity of patio slabs and earth at the rear of the property for access and started digging a tunnel under the property’s kitchen. The USAR team utilised ‘Delsar’ listening and seismic detection equipment and technical search cameras to pinpoint the dog’s exact location. A second access point was created through the property’s kitchen floor. Crews successfully managed to rescue Jock, a three-year-old black Poodle, who was alive and well, and was reunited with his owner.”
