Star Wars fans were a little disappointed that Luke Skywalker only turned up for a few seconds at the end of The Force Awakens, consoling themselves in any way they could.

One of these ways was through a parody account, Very Lonely Luke, but it seems they may have been off the mark on that one...

It now turns out that the Jedi was not as alone as we all thought when Rey finally reached him, and a new interview reveals that Luke has in fact been living with a band of indigenous creatures all this time.

Director Rian Johnson was not exactly details-orientated with Vanity Fair in its new Star Wars issue, though he assured us all that Luke's neighbours are "not Ewoks". Phew.

Luke has been living in a "Jedi village", which was created for the film by duplicating the beehive-shaped huts that monks originally lived in on the filming location of Skellig Michael in Ireland.

Johnson also confirmed that – as per Han Solo's comment in The Force Awakens – Luke did indeed go searching for the ancient Jedi temple, which is on Ahch-To.

It also looks like the movie is largely focusing on the relationship between Luke and Rey, though it will not be the "one-to-one" type seen between Luke and Yoda.

"There's a training element to it," Johnson said. "But it's not exactly what you would expect."

The feature also gives us a proper first look at the entire cast of The Last Jedi, including Mark Hamill as Luke with Daisy Ridley's Rey.

The movie has been kept largely under wraps plot-wise, though we do know The Last Jedi will delve further into the struggle between the Resistance and the First Order.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on 15 December.
