Lorna Brady in a red-tinted room in The Woman in the Wall episode 6

This superb thriller has been harrowing and thought-provoking, but also utterly gripping, as we have rooted for deeply traumatised Lorna (Ruth Wilson) to get the answers she desperately needs about her baby daughter Agnes. As the truth about Aoife, the ex-nun Lorna believed she had murdered, finally comes to light, along with some revelations about Agnes, can Lorna at last get closure? Meanwhile, dogged detective Colman (Daryl McCormack) is growing ever nearer, with the help of fellow cop Massey (Simon Delaney), to uncovering how Father Percy really died and exposing the horrific adoption scandal that goes back through the decades….

The Who Cares Wins Awards, 6.30 pm, Channel 4

It’s time to celebrate our NHS and the extraordinary heroes in the health and social care sector who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Nominees include 13-year-old Max Woosey, who raised more than £700,000 for the hospice that treated his seriously ill neighbour at the end of his life, plus life-saving ex-Army medic Dr Rachel Hawes of the Great North Air Ambulance Service. With plenty of famous faces in attendance, the glittering ceremony is hosted by Davina McCall from the Roundhouse in London.

Hamza: Strictly Birds of Prey, 7 pm, BBC One

Hamza Yassin for Strictly Birds of Prey
Hamza Yassin for Strictly Birds of Prey

Strictly winner Hamza Yassin is back to his day job, capturing Mother Nature in all her glory in this one-off. Tracking down his favourite birds of prey, the affable wildlife cameraman gives a sneak peek into his home life in the Scottish Highlands, introducing feathered friends such as buzzards and white-tailed eagles. Other highlights include getting up close to a golden eagle’s nest in the Cairngorms, and peregrine falcons feeding their chicks on top of a London hospital. Unsurprisingly, Hamza’s enthusiasm is truly infectious – pass the binoculars!

Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge, 6 pm, National Geographic

Pop star and The Masked Singer judge Rita Ora is this week’s trainee, joining Bear for an adventure in Nevada’s Valley of Fire. After skydiving in from 10,000ft up, the singer gets a crash course in navigation, rock climbing and water detection (essential for survival in the heat of the Mojave Desert), before being left alone to put her new-found skills to the test.

Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse in fishing gear at Carp Lake in Shropshire for Gone Fishing

Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse head to Sutton Lake in Shropshire, camping overnight between the willows on a quest for the only native fish they haven’t caught yet – the elusive crucian carp. As ever, the fishing pursuits and serene setting are a backdrop for Bob and Paul’s meditations on ageing and other conversational meanderings (banoffee pie versus tiramisu, the songs of Chicory Tip), while a discussion about record shops prompts a trip to nearby Market Drayton for a nostalgic rummage through the vinyl. Back at the lake, their sheer delight at landing a catch is still undimmed after six series, and they round off with a trip to the pub to celebrate life’s simple pleasures.

Best box set on TV tonight

Mad Men, UKTV Play (box set)

Mad Men Jon Hamm
Mad Men Jon Hamm

The brilliant period drama about a New York advertising agency, which originally aired on BBC Four, is available to stream for free on UKTV Play from Tuesday, September 19. Mad Men follows the fortunes of Sterling Cooper and its many incarnations, from the early 1960s to the early 1970s. In the role of genius ad man Don Draper, a character whose complicated history unfolds throughout the series, Jon Hamm became the breakout star, but it’s really an ensemble piece with a great cast including Elisabeth Moss, John Slattery, Christina Hendricks and Jared Harris. The recipient of numerous Emmys, BAFTAs and Golden Globes, it will no doubt remain a fixture on ‘greatest ever TV’ lists for many years to come (why not check where it placed on What To Watch's Top 100 TV shows list?).
