‘TV’s Top 5’: The 2024 Preview Episode

Welcome to the 242nd episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.

Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).

More from The Hollywood Reporter

Our first podcast of the new year looks at what new shows could become the new Succession or Ted Lasso as we also catch up on the news you may have missed over the holiday break. With the news cycle still slow to start the new year, we’re more like TV’s Top 3 this week.

Here’s how this week’s episode plays out:

1. Headlines

Slow Horses, The Gilded Age, Watson, Jeopardy, Starz and What We Do in the Shadows highlight the headlines you may have missed.

2. 2024 preview

The production delays as a result of last year’s dual Hollywood strikes are going to impact the release schedules for new and returning shows. With a slow start to buying following the strikes, networks and streamers alike have been focused on getting shows up and running again after reviewing their current slates that resulted in a wave of cancellations and decisions to unrenew shows like A League of Their Own and others. This segment is a platform-by-platform guide of the biggest shows to expect in the year ahead, including FX’s Shogun, Amazon’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Apple’s Masters of the Air, HBO’s The Sympathizer and Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, among several others.

3. Critic’s Corner

As usual, we end with Dan’s thoughts on this week’s new and returning series. In this episode, he weighs in on Netflix’s Brothers Sun and Fox’s Grimsburg. A special bonus: Dan, just back from London, shares his thoughts on the Stranger Things stage play and Lesley offers her two cents on the best holiday movies of 2023.
