‘TV’s Top 5’: The Emmys Preview Episode

Welcome to the 243rd episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.

Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).

More from The Hollywood Reporter

Our second podcast of the new year previews the 75th annual Primetime Emmys, which take place Monday, as Dan and I also discuss The Mandalorian and a slew of cancellations.

Here’s how this week’s episode plays out:

1. Headlines

The Last of Us, The White Lotus, Tina Fey, Stephanie Hsu, NCIS, Big Little Lies and Bookie highlight the week’s top industry news.

2. Grogu goes to the movies

Lucasfilm this week announced that the next Star Wars movie will be titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, as the Disney+ series makes the jump to theaters. We discuss if the movie is really season four of the series that serves as the backbone of the streaming service and how the feature film will impact the future of the show.

3. More cancellations

The era of Peak Contraction continues with the cancellations this week of Our Flag Means Death, Julia, Minx, American Born Chinese and The Good Doctor as this segment explores the takeaways from each of the decisions.

4. Emmys preview

THR’s awards editor, Tyler Coates, joins the show this week to preview what to expect from Monday’s 75th annual Primetime Emmys. Will Succession and Ted Lasso repeat? Will voters be as confused as Dan and Tyler are when it comes to which seasons are actually nominated as the delayed ceremony finds itself going up against other awards shows that are already giving out trophies for newer seasons of hits like The Bear.

5. Critic’s Corner

As usual, we end with Dan’s thoughts on this week’s new and returning series. In this episode, he weighs in on Marvel’s Echo, HBO’s True Detective, AMC’s Monsieur Spade and Peacock’s Ted.

Hear it all now on TV’s Top 5. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast to never miss an episode. (Reviews welcome!) You can also email us with any topics or Mailbag questions you’d like addressed in future episodes at TVsTop5@THR.com.
