A small aeroplane carrying two people crashed to the ground near an airport in Scotland. The light aircraft plummeted near to Glasgow Prestwick Airport on Tuesday (April 23).

Police and paramedics attended the scene in Ayrshire, Scotland, and closed off a main road in the area amid the emergency services response.

The aircraft had two passengers inside when it crashed into a nearby field. Two men, aged 65 and 75, were taken to hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries.

Police Scotland urged people to avoid the area as emergency services responded. The incident was first reported at around 4.10pm.

A spokesperson for the force said: " At around 4.10pm on Tuesday, 23 April, 2024, we received a report of a small aircraft having crashed in a field near to the A719 at Monkton.

"Emergency services attended and two men aged 65 and 75 were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital by helicopter for treatment to serious injuries. The A719 was closed at the B739, Monkton and re-opened around 7.30pm.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
