But back in 2012, Fury fought in a far less illustrious venue - but one much closer to home. In what was then his 19th fight, Fury moved a step closer to his eventual world title success when he stopping New Yorker Vinny Maddalone in five roundsin their WBO Intercontinental heavyweight contest in Clevedon

The then 23-year-old praised his noisy fans after being roared on to victory by a sell-out crowd of 2,500. The Manchester-born giant told The Bristol Post: “Fighting in Bristol has been fantastic. This is the first time I’ve been here and the people have been brilliant to me. Everywhere I have gone, people have stopped me to wish me well and that crowd was just awesome.

“That’s why I took the microphone at the end of the fight to thank them personally. I would like to shake each and every one by the hand, but I know that is not possible. I told them I will be back one day with a world championship belt to show them.”

He had too much class for 38-year-old Maddalone, landing a couple of heavy punches in the opening round to stun his opponent. It was all one-way traffic thereafter with another right-hander from the 6ft 9in Fury opening the cut under Maddalone’s left eye in the fourth round. The American battled on, but, with Fury indicating he wanted the fight halted, the referee eventually stepped in to end the contest midway through the fifth.

“I knew it was a matter of time. I actually called the referee over, he was taking some big shots,” said Fury. "Im still undefeated. I would like to say I’m ready for anyone in the world. Klitschkos – bring them on. Americans – bring them on.
