UEFA make Jude Bellingham suspension decision after controversial England celebration

Jude Bellingham has been given a suspended one-match ban by UEFA but will still be able to play for England in their Euro 2024 clash against Switzerland.

The action comes after the midfielder's celebration following his injury-time equaliser in the match against Slovakia, which saw England progress to extra time and eventually secure a spot in the quarter-finals thanks to Harry Kane's winning goal.

Bellingham addressed the incident on X (formerly known as Twitter), clarifying that his gesture was "An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight."

Despite this, UEFA has imposed a €30,000 fine on Bellingham and issued a one-match suspension for breaching conduct rules. However, the suspension is deferred for a year, ensuring his availability for the upcoming quarter-final match this weekend.

UEFA's CEDB (Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body) stated in its ruling: "fine the English Football Association player Jude Bellingham €30,000 and to suspend him for a total of one UEFA competition match for which he would be otherwise eligible for violating the basic rules of decent conduct.

"Said suspension is not immediately enforced and is subject to a probationary period of one year, starting from the date of the present decision."

The FA has also been slapped with a €10,000 fine for crowd disturbances and an additional €1,000 penalty for the lighting of fireworks.

Gareth Southgate's men take on Switzerland in the final-eight clash on Saturday evening (5pm kick-off). The winners of the match will take on the winners of Netherlands vs Turkey for a place in the final of the competition.

The other quarter-finals take place on Friday and see Spain take on Germany and Portugal come up against France.
