Matt Hancock has warned that "very extensive" local or national lockdowns could be enforced in the event of a second coronavirus wave this winter.

The Health Secretary said nationwide restrictions could not be ruled out should England see a spike in Covid-19 cases, and measures could be tightened over Christmas to avoid an uptick in infections.

His warnings came as teaching unions condemned the Government's decision to release new coronavirus guidelines for schools just days before millions of pupils are set to return to the classroom.

Secondary students in England could be forced to isolate for 14 days if a single virus case is confirmed in their year group, according to measures published late on Friday.

In other developments, Priti Patel has warned organisers of illegal raves to expect a major crackdown on such "unacceptable behaviour", and the UK virus death toll has risen by 12, with more than 1,000 new cases confirmed.
