UK households who have talcum powder in bathroom 'warned'

UK households with tubs of talcum powder in the house have been warned. People who use talc have been warned over a dangerous link between the commonly used powder and CANCER, after fresh studies threw light on the issue.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the WHO, has recently concluded a review assessing the carcinogenic nature of talc. The World Health Organisation has subsequently issued a statement over the findings.

"After thoroughly reviewing the available scientific literature, the Working Group of 29 international experts classified talc as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A) on the basis of a combination of limited evidence for cancer in humans (for ovarian cancer)," it said.

It also warned there is "sufficient evidence for cancer in experimental animals, and strong mechanistic evidence that talc exhibits key characteristics of carcinogens in human primary cells and experimental systems." WHO said: "A causal role for talc could not be fully established. An increased rate of ovarian cancer was also observed in studies looking at occupational exposure of women exposed to talc in the pulp and paper industry.

"However, confounding by co-exposure to asbestos could not be excluded, and the increased rate was based on small numbers of ovarian cancers in those occupational studies." Talc has been given the second-highest level of cancer warning.

The NHS explains: "Ovarian cancer affects the ovaries. It mostly affects women over the age of 50. It can affect anyone who has ovaries. The ovaries are 2 small organs that store the eggs needed to make babies. Sometimes ovarian cancer runs in families.

"The symptoms of ovarian cancer, such as bloating, are not always obvious. Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed late, but early diagnosis can mean it is more treatable. You can still get ovarian cancer if you've had your ovaries removed because it can also affect your fallopian tubes, or the lining inside your tummy (peritoneum)."
