UK set for first proper heatwave of year with 30C hitting England during Euro 2024

The first proper heatwave of the year will coincide with Euro 2024 - as England kick off their campaign in Germany with temperatures skyrocketing across the country. Pub gardens and parks are set to be packed with a heatwave hitting on Sunday, June 16, as England take on Serbia.

The weather map, produced by forecasters at InMeteo, shows parts of southern England and eastern areas being the hottest. The mercury could hit 30C in parts of south London and Surrey. England will face Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia in their Euro 2024 group next summer.

Gareth Southgate's side face a replay of their Euro 2020 semi-final against the Danes in Group C, having won 2-1 after extra-time in July 2021 before eventually losing to Italy in the final. England's first game on Sunday June 16 sees them travel to Gelsenkirchen to take on Serbia.

They then take on Denmark four days later in Frankfurt before rounding off their group on Tuesday June 25 in Cologne against Slovenia. Before next weekend's heatwave, the Met Office says on Tuesday June 4 we can expect a "mostly dry start, then a band of cloud and rain, locally heavy, will quickly sweep southeastwards during the afternoon."

"Becoming drier and brighter during the evening. Turning breezier and feeling cooler and fresher," it adds. "A rather breezy but mostly dry night with plenty of clear spells. Some showers are likely towards the northwest. Feeling cooler than of late, especially where sheltered from the wind."

Looking ahead to tomorrow, Wednesday, it goes on: "A chilly start, then a mostly dry day with plenty of sunny spells. A few showers are possible in the north. A fresh northwest breeze adding to the cooler feel." The outlook for Thursday to Saturday adds: "Sunny spells and scattered showers again on Thursday.

"Perhaps a band of rain sweeping south Friday. Rather cloudy but mostly dry on Saturday. Temperatures near normal, with some chilly nights."
