UK tourists in Majorca warned Brits 'not welcome' in some parts of island

Anti British traveller protesters in the Balearic Islands have been warned they are "playing with fire". The Majorca Daily Bulletin, a local news outlet, reports protesters and demonstrators have been warned they should be "careful what they wish for".

Thousands took to the streets in the Balearic Islands to protest against mass tourism and overcrowding this weekend. One UK tourist said they had said they would "not be going to destinations where Brits are not welcome" - and that some resorts had been "unusually quiet".

Demonstrators marched through Menorca and Majorca on Saturday in the latest protests over tourist "massification" across the islands. Carme Reines, from a collective which organised the protest in Palma de Mallorca, said: "We want the authorities to stop people who have not lived here more than five years from buying properties and to put more controls on holiday accommodation."

Javier Carbonell, a real estate agent in Mallorca, added: "We want less mass tourism and more sustainable tourism." But a Brit said: "If the Spanish want to trash their main sources of income, that's up to them. I think they are targeting the wrong area i.e. the tourist.

"The Spanish need to ensure their Government gets the balance right by welcoming tourism, getting tougher on bad behaviour by tourists and providing homes for their tourist industry workers." Another said: "There is no point in going where you are not wanted, there are plenty of other places to visit in Europe and around the world.

"See how they manage without tourism." Another said: "I wonder if its because the british are more trouble than they're worth with the drunken violence that seems to follow the british." And a fourth wrote: "What else are they going to do. I changed my holiday plans from Spain. They don’t want us to visit so I respected their feelings."

"A universal truth regarding the money at least, applies to us as much as them," another said.
