UK tourists in Spain during June and July face £650 fine 'from Friday onwards'

UK tourists have been warned of £500 fines in Spain for breaking new rules in June and July. Wearing football jerseys in public in Spain could see England fans hit with cruel fines as they try and support the Three Lions at Euro 2024.

"As the Euros kick off this month, we are seeing increasing numbers of British tourists head to their holiday destinations to enjoy matches in the sun. This has meant increasing bans on specific clothing items including football shirts and novelty wear to promote a more respectful environment,” said a spokesperson from One Sure Insurance.

"Majorca has seen multiple restaurants targeting clothes associated with drunken tourism. We’ve also seen that wearing just a bikini or being bare-chested with swimming shorts away from the beach could land tourists fines of up to £500 in various locations."

"We are urging all travellers to familiarise themselves with these regulations before departing to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday experience,” added experts at One Sure Insurance. Having an alcoholic drink on the beach can lead to a £650 fine, and throwing cigarette butts or litter from a moving vehicle can land a fine of four points and 200 euros.

Balaeric Islands President Francina Armengol said that excess tourism is “not welcome” in the region. “It is neither the kind of tourism we want nor what residents deserve,” she said earlier this year before the summer season began.

Pedro Marín and Juan Miguel Ferrer, manager and chief executive of Playa de Palma, told local media there have been large groups of tourists just looking to get drunk. They don’t book much in advance, stay just a few nights and generally spend around €40 a day, “generally on alcohol and cans of beer that they consume, drinking on the street.”

“The availability of alcohol in all-inclusive hotels may have been controlled, but the problem is out on the streets,” they said.
