UK tourists staying in hotels this summer face £309 fine due to 'universal' rule

UK tourists staying in hotel rooms this summer have been warned they face £309 fines for breaking a common rule across the globe. UK holidaymakers jetting off for stays in hotels as they soak up some much-needed sunshine abroad have been warned.

Some places can charge you up to hundreds for smoking in a hotel room, according to Thrillist.com. One US customer described how they were charged the $400 smoking fee by the hotel even though they said they hadn't smoked in their room in a recent Reddit post on r/AskHotels.

They wrote: "Don't surprised when you get charged a non-smoking fee. I just cleared out someone's bank account because they stunk up the entire 4th floor with their devil's lettuce and they thought they were being slick by covering the sprinkler in the room with a plastic bag... and then leaving it there.

"Person calls back 10 minutes later asking why we took $150 out of her account because she's "from out of town and this is really messing with my finances." Me: "Well, when housekeeping went in to clean the room, it smelled strongly of marijuana and the sprinkler was covered with a plastic bag. So we charged the non-smoking fee."

"Guest: CLICK. I couldn't even charge the full $250 because the card declined for the full amount. Don't smoke in a non-smoking room, kids." In reply, a Redditor said: "We stopped at a small motel in a small town that had a sign posted in the room about the $100 smoking fee. The place smelled very much like someone had smoked a few packs of cigarettes in there.

"My husband went to the front desk immediately and let them know, and we opened the windows and aired the place out. At least we weren't charged." And another said: "So I live in a legal state and some guy left the cannabis containers in the trash, smoked up the room, then when he called about the fee posted and was told why he went off on me "do you think I would smoke around my kids?

"You smelled what I brought back" and I told him "Sir I know what fresh weed smells like vs smoked and there were empty containers soooo yes I do believe you smoked in my room" he threatened to take us to court...he didn't.

"We literally do not give a s*** if you smoke it outside I've told people as much and I have directed people to dispensaries but the moment you light up in a room I will bust you and I say this as a stoner."
