UK tourists warned Spanish towns being 'abandoned' as locals 'flee'

UK tourists have been told some must-visit towns in Spain are on the brink of "abandonment". Must-visit Spanish towns are on the brink of total abandonment as locals flock to cities for work, with popular destinations left bare.

More and more Spanish towns face total abandonment as young adults flock to big cities. Olive Press reported the towns of Belchite in Zaragoza, Granadilla in Caceres and El Acebuchal in Malaga are empty.

Olive Press reported: "Around 3,000 villages in Spain have been abandoned in recent decades due to depopulation as younger people go to big cities for work." La Razon notes that El Acebuchal “deserves a visit” from Brits.

It goes on, adding: “It is characterised by its whitewashed houses adorned with lavender flowers, cobbled streets and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean - all the hallmarks of this small town.”

Despite Belchite’s resistance, the town was almost completely devastated by the Spanish Cibil War. When the war ended, the regime of Francisco Franco did not want to rebuild Belchite but to create a new one next to it. Today it is known as Belchite Nuevo.

The ruins were left as a reminder of the Civil War, known as Pueblo Viejo de Belchite. Another not to miss abandoned village as a result of the Spanish Civil war is , some 25 km away from Belchite. This one is much smaller than Belchite but its hilltop position make this ghost town perfect for a few photos.

The abandoned village of Granadilla, of feudal origin with military and defensive character, founded by Fernando II de León in 1170, is considered as the third great walled Spanish site, by preserving intact the greater part of its Wall and preserves houses and streets.

Evacuated after being declared floodable after the construction of Gabriel y Galan Reservoir, it is settled on a hill as a kind of peninsula, being a strategic step in the ancient Silver Route in the direction of Las Hurdes.
