The UK Independence’s famous purple and yellow colours and its pound sign could be ditched as part of a major rebrand as the party prepares for a post-Brexit future.

Only the name – Ukip - is safe because it is worth "millions of pounds", Paul Nuttall said.

The party's leader said that he would unveil a new image of a “post-Brexit Ukip” at the party's annual conference in Torquay in September.

Mr Nuttall told The Telegraph: “We are going to rebrand the post-Brexit Ukip and it will all be launched at the annual conference in Torquay in September.”

The party's pound sign logo might disappear as well as its familiar yellow and purple colours. Mr Nuttall said: “Everything is up for debate.”

Plans for the overhaul were due to be discussed at a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee this afternoon.

Former leader Nigel Farage tried - and failed - to drop the pound sign logo five years ago.

Mr Nuttall said the name of the party was “the one thing that is off the agenda but everything else we will talk about”

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, he said: “Ukip’s brand is worth a lot of money. It is one of the most recognised brands.

"It was worth millions back in 2008 when we looked at the cost of rebranding  and it came into the millions.

“I think it needs modernising  - we need a different feel to the party as we move into the post-Brexit age.”

Mr Nuttall - who was wearing a yellow and purple tie - said Ukip had originally settled on purple and yellow branding “because there were no other colours available”.

He shrugged off any concerns that he was having to lead Ukip in the shadow of his predecessor Nigel Farage, who attended the speech in a central London hotel.

Mr Nuttall said he had asked Mr Farage to come to the speech, saying: “It does not bother me. I want him to be front of house.

“I want him to be on the telly and radio selling Ukip’s message because he is one of the best communicators in British politics today. I am relaxed about my own position, trust me.”

Mr Nuttall brushed off the resignation of the party’s sole MP Douglas Carswell, saying that the Ukip does not need any representation in the House of Commons to influence Britain's exit from the European Union.

Mr Nuttall said Ukip "isn't going away" despite Mr Carswell going independent on Saturday after declaring it was "job done" when the UK voted to quit in the referendum.

Setting out the party's six tests for Britain's divorce from Brussels, Mr Nuttall warned Theresa May the Eurosceptics would be the "guard dogs" of Brexit.

If the Prime Minister backslides during the negotiations, Ukip will "prosper electorally" and is on course to increase its vote share in upcoming local elections, he claimed.

But Mr Nuttall refused to say whether the party would lose some of the 196 Ukip seats in May’s local elections that the party won primarily from the Tories in 2014.

Mr Nuttall said: "We will be the guard dogs of Brexit and woe betide Mrs May, woe betide the Conservative Party if they begin to backslide."

Mr Nuttall said: "I've read the obituary of Ukip over the years more times than I've had hot dinners and they have always been wrong.

"Let's be clear, Ukip doesn't need representation in the House of Commons to be able to influence the political landscape.

"Let's not forget when we forced David Cameron into offering that referendum back in 2013 we did not have anyone in the House of Commons."

The party's key tests for Brexit are:

* Parliament must resume its supremacy of law-making with no impediments, qualifications or restrictions on its future actions agreed in any leaving deal.

* Britain must resume full control of its immigration and asylum policies and border controls.

* Leaving the EU must involve restoring to the UK full maritime sovereignty.

* The UK must retake its seat at the World Trade Organisation and resume its sovereign right to sign trade agreements with other countries.

* There must be no final settlement payment to the EU, and no ongoing payments to the EU budget after Brexit.

* Brexit must be done and dusted before the end of 2019.
