Un-fare: Traffic Warden Fines Driver Parked On His Own Drive

A driver was stunned when he discovered a parking ticket on his car - despite it being parked on his own drive.

Niall McCarthy returned home from work to find the unwanted surprise stuck on the front of his car at his home in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire.

The 49-year-old has been parking on the drive outside his house since 2002 and has so far not been slapped with a £35 parking fine.

Describing the fine as “laughable”, Niall said: “The car was as tight to the house as we can get it.

“The fact that they had to physically walk onto my drive to put the ticket on just shows how ridiculous it is.

"If it is one of the traffic wardens I know, I’ll be a little miffed because it is a small town and I know a few of them.

"We are going to try and contest it because I have always been told as long as I am not over the yellow line, there isn’t a problem.”

Niall said the ticket was issued for “parking in a restricted street”.

He added: “We park there all week and at the weekends so I’m not sure if it is just a new warden who has a problem with it.

"I can understand why there are double yellows down there as it is tight, but we aren’t obstructing anyone.”

Niall and wife Amanda are now waiting to see a picture which the warden took of their car before they try and contest the ticket in a bid to get it overturned.

An East Herts District Council spokesperson said: “We will be happy to consider any information the motorist wishes to provide and will take it into account if the motorist takes up the right to challenge the penalty charge notice.”
