An investigation has been launched after a 'disturbance' in a Nottingham street led to bins and gardens being searched by police. Nottinghamshire Police were called to Wellington Square, off Derby Road, in Lenton on the afternoon of Friday, April 26.

The bottom half of the road, which is a cul-de-sac between Derby Road and Ilkeston Road, was cordoned off by officers who also set up a smaller section of police tape at the front of Wellesley House half way down the street. Forensics experts, who were wearing masks and photographing the scene, searched through residents' bins and gardens, according to one student living on the street.

On Tuesday, April 30, police explained they had been called to a disturbance inside one of the street's properties, which neighbours suggested was Wellesley House. Detective Sergeant Paul Crofts, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Officers attended a disturbance at an address in Wellington Square, Lenton, around 2.10pm on Friday, April 26.

“Inquiries are still ongoing to establish exactly what happened during the incident. Anyone with any information is asked to call the police on 101, quoting incident 374 of April 26.”

Those living on the sidestreet were confused over what sort of incident could have warranted the large police response. "The question of what happened is still there, as the police haven't really told us," one University of Nottingham student said.

"We haven't had many details from them so people might be worried, but I felt okay when I saw how many police were there. It's interesting that we don't know why the cordon was there though."

Another neighbour, who was bringing his bike out of a flat at Wellesley House, said: "I had completely missed whatever happened, but when I came back there were coppers everywhere.

"I haven't heard anything from my neighbours about what has happened so its all a bit strange." The man claimed the previously taped-off building was owned by Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA).

NCHA confirmed it owned and managed a number of flats on the street and explained it was helping Nottinghamshire Police with its investigation. "We’re aware of the police presence on Friday, April 26, and are working with the police and offering what assistance we can," a spokesperson for the housing association said.

"We’re unable to offer any further detail at this time."
