Uncontained Texas Fire Scorches 300,000 Acres in Panhandle

With wildfires threatening several towns in the Texas Panhandle late on Tuesday, February 27, Gov Gregg Abbott issued disaster declarations for 60 counties.

According to latest information from the Texas A&M Forest Service, the largest of the fires, the Smokehouse Creek Fire in Hutchinson County, had scorched 300,000 acres of land by the early hours of Wednesday.

Dry conditions contributed to the speed of the fire’s spread, according to the forest service. The towns of Canadian and Glazier were under evacuation orders. Credit: Texas A&M Forest Service via Storyful
