'Undateables' Christmas proposal leaves viewers in tears

The Undateables stars Daniel Wakeford and Lily Taylor and now engaged, following what is surely the most festive proposal of the year.

The couple first met on last year’s Christmas special of the Channel 4 dating show, with the formerly unlucky in love Wakeford – an autistic singer/songwriter – being introduced to Taylor, who has learning difficulties.

A year on, Channel 4 revisited the couple, whose relationship is clearly going very well indeed.

The Undateables: A Festive Proposal, which aired on Tuesday, saw Wakeford pop the question to Taylor after singing ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ with the help of a choir. Thankfully, she said yes.

The touching proposal left many viewers in tears, which some taking to Twitter to praise the sweet scene.

One wrote: ‘#Undateables has me in TEARS. That proposal was so beautiful Good lad Daniel!!!’ while another: ‘The Undateables Christmas proposal has me in tears right now I am so so happy!!!’

And a third: ‘How lovely was that proposal so pure and innocent how we could learn from them had me in tears #Undateables.’

Previously, Wakeford started an Undateables fan campaign to get his single ‘Everybody Needs Before Christmas’ to number one, but he wasn’t successful.

Back in November, The Undateables favourite also appeared on Good Morning Britain, but things took an awkward turn after stand-in presenter Richard Madeley asked a rather ignorant question about autism.

Wakeford was appearing on the ITV morning show with his mum Carol to talk about his new album, but viewers were left unimpressed with Madeley when he asked the star’s mum if he’d “always been autistic”.

Responding to the question, Wakeford’s mum said: “Yes. Well, it’s controversial about that but we realised round about 18 months that there was a problem.

“He lost all of his speech and language abilities and that came about very slowly and then it was never really as it was. He is on the autistic spectrum with a speech disorder.”

She explained how singing and writing has helped him to communicate and express his feelings.

Well, it’s certainly helped him find a fiancé.
