Underworld only released its final cinematic chapter last year, but producers are already thinking of ways to resurrect the undead horror franchise.

Producer Len Wiseman is at work rebooting Underworld into an episodic series aimed for a premium cable or high-profile streaming platform, according to Deadline.

This version of Underworld will seek to forge its own identity by more fully embracing the inherently gruesome and grisly world of Death Dealers, vampires and lycans.

"The series will be a pretty big departure from the films," Wiseman explained. "I don't want to say it's more adult, but it's definitely less comic book in its tone and character."

No network or streaming service is attached yet, but Sony is on board to produce the project along with Len Wiseman, Tom Rosenberg (Million Dollar Baby), Gary Lucchesi (The Age of Adaline) and Eric Reid (Crank).

There is no indication yet that the TV adaptation of Underworld will star Kate Beckinsale, who played Death Dealer Selene for the fifth time in last year's Underworld: Blood Wars.

Beckinsale was married to her producer Len Wiseman, but the couple ended their 12-year relationship last autumn shortly before the most recent instalment, Underworld: Blood Wars, hit cinemas.

All told, the five Underworld films have made an impressive total of $539 million at the worldwide box office since 2003. Watch a trailer for Underworld: Blood Wars below:
