'Unfortunate': Man supporting friend at court was caught with knife keyring

A man who came to court to support his friend was caught with a knife on his keyring.

John Kennedy attended Glasgow Sheriff Court on February 21, 2024, with his pal who was the victim of a crime.

He arrived shortly after 10am and was searched.

He emptied his pockets in a tray and a black-handled knife was found.

Security officers called the police. When they arrived, Kennedy was cautioned and charged.

Kennedy, of the East End, told them it was for his work at the Amazon warehouse.

Cops spoke to the general manager and found that this is not permitted at the warehouse.

The 37-year-old appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week after he pleaded guilty to being in possession of the weapon.

His lawyer said: "He did use it for his work, despite what the manager said. It was a small item, attached to his keyring.

"He was coming to court to support his friend, who was a victim of a crime.

"He went through the metal detector, he simply forgot. He is educated now that it is illegal to carry a knife.

"He suffers from some health issues."

Sheriff Vincent Lunny said: "This is an unfortunate matter. This is an item that is prohibited."

Kennedy was fined £160 plus a £10 victim surcharge.
