University Hospitals Sussex appoints new chairwoman

University Hospitals Sussex has appointed a new chairwoman.

Philippa Slinger takes over from Alan McCarthy who retired last year.

The trained mental health nurse has worked in mental health, community and acute care across the NHS and the private sector throughout her career.

She also has 25 years of board-level experience, which includes her role as chief executive of various NHS providers.

More recently, she was the improvement director for NHS Improvement and then chief executive of Devon’s Integrated Care System.

Philippa said: "Joining the trust board as chairwoman at one of the largest trusts in the country is a privilege and one I am thoroughly looking forward to.

"This is an exciting new role for me to help support all colleagues across the organisation.

"There is already so much brilliant work going on, including hospital site transformations, constant innovation and new digital pathways. With so much important work ahead, I am honoured to play my part in giving the people of Sussex the very best possible care.

"I am truly committed to the NHS and strongly believe that it works to serve those in need of its services and in support of its staff to enable them to be the very best they can be.

"UHSussex has a wonderful opportunity to continue its development and consistently deliver the care we all would want for our loved ones, and to be the employer we would all want to work for. I’m looking forward to working with the board, governors, partners, MPs and stakeholders.”

Dr George Findlay, chief executive of UHSussex, said: "On behalf of the board and all our staff I would like to offer a warm welcome to Philippa.

"Her extensive knowledge of the NHS as a nurse, leader and adviser will offer us great support and insight.

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust said Philippa will work closely with the board and in partnership with local partners to drive UHSussex’s vision of providing excellent care "every time for all patients".

The trust runs hospitals including the Royal Sussex County in Brighton, Worthing Hospital and St Richard's in Chichester.
